Forecasting approach

For select local locations, such as Narrabeen (NSW) and Mandurah (WA), a morphodynamic numerical model (XBeach) is used to forecast beach erosion and coastal flooding hazards. This approach provides a "line-in-the-sand" estimate of where the water and erosion might extend to and offers more detail than the categorical forecasts used in for the regional-scale forecast.

Note that erosion forecasts are only produced if a storm is predicted. For calm conditions, only Total Water Level predictions are provided.

Safe Corridor Width

A "corridor line" (shown as a red dashed line on the map), is a boundary where beach erosion and coastal flooding hazards may produce a larger risk to the community. An estimate of where the water and beach erosion may extend to is also plotted on the map. At each point, the distance from the water and beach erosion extents to the corridor line is calculated over the forecast window. These distances are then categorised into three categories:

Criteria Description
SCW > 10m At least 10 m between the corridor line and any water or erosion
5m < SCW < 10 m Water and/or erosion extended to within 5 to 10 m of the corridor line
SCW < 5 m Water and/or erosion extends to within 5 m of the corridor line
